Elizabeth's father (i.e., the man who was king before Elizabeth became queen after his demise) had no male heirs. Therefore, Elizabeth, according to the rules of succession, became Queen of England, Scotland and Wales, and the United Kingdom, domains and territories of the same.

Elizabeth's husband would not automatically become king simply by marrying the queen. Such only happens in American fairy tales.

There are rules that govern and guide such.

We have a Queen, because the last King only had two daughters. HM Queen Elizabeth II has been married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh for nearly 60 years (they celebrate their diamond wedding on 20 November this year). He does not have the title King as roayl consorts to a Queen Regnant only have the title Prince , there is no such thing as a King Consort in British Law.

The wife of a ruling King of England is always a Queen. The wives of every King have had the title Queen as far back as records go. Henry VIII had six Queens. The United Kingdom does not recognise morganatic marriages, that is a marriage where the wife does not take the titles of the husband. George IV, when he was Prince Regent, went through a form of marriage with Maria Fitzherbert. She was a Catholic and the marriage was not recognised. George later married his Queen, Adelaide. When Charles ascends to the throne, Camilla will automatically be the Queen. She may choose not to use the title but it will be hers nevertheless.

Leaving aside Matilda (who should have been queen) and Jane Grey (who was named queen for nine days), England has only had six ruling queens. The husband of Mary I, Philip of Spain, was given the title "King". Elizabeth I did not marry. The husband of Mary II was King William III; The husband of Queen Anne, Mary II's sister' was not offered the kingship. Victoria wanted Albert to have the title "King" but Parliament refused and following Victoria's wishes, Elizabeth II did not ask for the title for Prince Philip - although she could have done.

"and his wife Queen Elizabeth (who, after her husband died and daughter took the throne, was referred to as the Queen Mother)."

The title "Queen Mother" was created for Queen Elizabeth, the wife of George VI, because the normal title "Queen Dowager" was held by the late king's mother, Queen Mary, the wife of George V, who was still alive. Had Queen Mary died before her son, the Queen Mother would have had the title Queen Dowager.

It is up to the monarch, whether male or female, to allow their spouse to become the King or Queen along side them, if I'm not mistaken. For whatever reasons, Elizabeth did not allow Philip to take a King title.
There have been, in the past, a husband and wife King & Queen, such as Queen Elizabeth's parents King George VI & and his wife Queen Elizabeth (who, after her husband died and daughter took the throne, was referred to as the Queen Mother). But there will only ever be ONE reigning monarch, regardless of married status or what title they choose for their spouse.

Also, the Duke of Edinburgh (QEII's hubby Prince Philip) was given that title by the Queen upon their marriage. She made it up just for him!

When George VI died, he left no male heirs so the crown passed to his eldest daughter, the current Elizabeth II.

When she married Prince Philip Mountbatten of Greece (related to the Russian Romanovs) he was given the title Duke of Edinburgh, consort to the Queen. The reason he is not King is that in Royal lineage the King is always superior to a Queen but since Philip is not from the British line of succession he cannot take precidence over the rightful monarch.
When Elizabeth dies the crown will pass to her eldest son Charles. His wife, Camilla, could have the title of Queen if she so chooses (but that is unlikely to happen since it would prove very unpopular- she will probably retain the title Duchess of Cornwall, consort to the King).

Prince Phillip is nowhere in line, geesse; it's Elizabeth and Phillip's male child (Charles) and his children who are next in line.

Soozn, the reason Elizabeth's mother (also Elizabeth) was referred to as a queen was because she was a woman who married a king. They consider this OK, because the title of king is the highest, so making his wife queen does not put her above him. The same does not apply when a man marries the regent queen, because she cannot have a husband ranked above her when she is the ruler. So they bestow the highest title under queen, which is prince, to the queen's consort; hence, Prince Phillip. He was already a Prince of Greece anyway.

There is only ever a King or a Queen, we hve a Queen as Elizabeth was next in line for the throne and is female. it has nothing to do with brothers and sisters or husbands and wives. so for example. presuming Charles takes the throne next as planned he will be a king. Then when he dies Prince William will become King but his brother Harry will stay a prince.

also the spouse of the king or queen automatically becomes a prince or princess, which is why Queen Elizabeth is married to Prince Phillip.

:o)

Edit 01/10/07 um....why would anyone mark me down for giving a correct factual answer to a question like this. don't get me wrong it doesn't massivley bother me, but makes me wonder! :o)

When Queen Elizabeth II's father became King in 1936 upon the abdication of her uncle, King Edward VIII, she became Heiress Presumptive and was thenceforth known as Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth. She was first in line to the english throne after her father's death. Elizabeth married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark) on 20 November 1947. They are second cousins twice removed.
Since Queen Elizabeth II is Queen, her husband is only Prince Conort. Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland have all had kings consort; however, since the rank of king normally outranks that of queen, in most monarchies the queen's husband is given the title of prince or prince consort instead.
Queen Elizabeth II's first son Prince Charles of Wales is currently first in line to the throne. He will become King of England and his wife will be Princess Consort.

Yes she is married to Prince Phillip who was from Greece and royalty. However because she is ruler she does not need a King to be on the throne as she was first in line behind her father. Therefore no king. Just the Prince Consort. Along with many other titles that been conferred to him over the years since his marriage.

Because Elizabeth was next in line to the throne and she has girl parts instead of boy parts.

It's a little kid myth that there is a king and his wife is the queen. In reality, if there is a king, his wife is a princess and if there is a queen, her husband is a prince.
