If someone murders a child on purpose after doing very ugly things to them they deserve to die. If someone kills 12 women because his "mommy" didn't love him.. he deserves to die. When women kill their children and claim "someone" told them to do it.. they deserve to die before they reproduce to kill again. I also think pedophiles should get the death penalty too..

Same answer I gave 60 years ago if I thought execution stopped one murder I would gladly carry out the sentence my self ( I wonder if it came down to it how many of you would do the same )
Nothing in that sixty years is different nothing has changed most homicides are still in family's and most murderers are caught easily. Countries which have regular executions have as many homicides as any other, some have more. Those States in the USA which have the death penalty do not have less homicides than those that don't. Locking them away for life ( and I mean for the rest of their natural days) is a far worst punishment than execution that's why some murderers ask for the death penalty, why give them an easy way out.

I believe that the death penalty is a horrendous idea for several reasons. First in very few cases can we truly say for defenite that a person commited a crime, several stdies on Death Row inmates in the states found that there is a considerable percentage somewhere between 6 and 14% should not be there for one reason or another. How can any society claim to be based on ideas of justice if it too engages in murder? For this reason alone I think that capital punishment should be outlawed everywhere

If a person plots and successfully carries out a murder, they should receive a punishment that fits the crime. No matter what their reason for killing was, the bottom line is they took a life while shocking and hurting the friends and families of the victim. Putting them in jail, providing them with free shelter, food and medical care until they die a natural death doesn't seem like fitting punishment to me. Since people know they can commit murder and get taken care of the rest of their life if they get caught, (as punishment?) what deterrent is there?
Accidentally killing someone should be treated differently though and that's my two cents.

I have always thought of the death penalty as a form of human sacrifice. A number of people, usually men, are killed each year and by so doing the sins of the rest of us are washed away.

If a country is going to have a death penalty, why hide the fact behind all sorts of complex laws and waffle? Why not simply bring he whole thing out into the open and have bad people placed inside the Wicker-man and burned at the end of summer, together with some pigs and sheep. This then will ensure a good harvest for next year. And, while the sacrificial humans are burning, we can drink beer and listen to their screams.

Beats the bell out of any sport I can think of. And, at least it is honest.

Yes, it is legalized (sanctioned is the word you'll often hear used) homicide.

Societies typically say that some killings are OK, while others are not.

In the USA you cannot kill your neighbor, unless you can show that he or she was trying to kill you, in which case it is deemed 'justifiable' homicide.

In the USA it is also allowed to kill someone that the courts deem deserving of a death penalty.

Many countries point to the USA as barbaric in this respect, but take a careful look at what those same countries do in times of war... they tell their soldiers that it is OK to kill. That it is justifiable; sanctioned.

Legal.

If countries are to stay viable, stay in existence, they feel they must be able to kill - that is why it is accepted in some cases.

I am opposed to the death penalty. However given my way, criminals would die in FAR greater numbers. Crime is a violation of a persons duty to their society. Criminals, from children on up, should learn the hard way that society doesn't need them, and that they DO need society. Crimes should have one basic punishment: exile. Depending on the severity of a crime the criminal should be exiled to a disagreeable location, the degree of disagreeability depending on the crime. Then for a period of perhaps one day to one month the criminal would have to fend for themselves. A statistically large number would die after more than a few days, more if the weather was cold.
Since the condemned would be "set free" there is no question of "cruel" and since it would be the only punishment there will be no cause to call it "unusual"
Criminals who survived would learn a valuable lesson. Far better than the degree in criminality taught in the prisons.

if you murder someone just for enjoyment or just because you wanted to get back at them.... then i think you should have your life taken from you. However, i do not think someone should be sentenced to death, if they have to use self defense because their life or well being is in jeopardy. My state uses the death penalty, and my state also supports self defense. If someone comes into your house, and tells you that they're going to kill you, you have the right to use deadly force if necessary to protect yourself.
Do i think the death penalty is justified...my answer is yes, in the most extreme situations, but then you have to ask yourself another question....what is an extreme situation? One question does nothing but lead to another. But i will also add, that i would not be upset if they abolished the dealth penalty from every state. I guess i have mixed feelings on the issue

If we believe that it is wrong for one human being to kill another, then we should believe that it is equally wrong for a group of hb's to kill another. If we accept the Death Penalty, we are accepting murder. One you start to divide murder into different categories depending upon how awful you think the crime is you dilute the sheer horror of any murder for whatever reason. No one becomes a murderer without having first been a helpless infant. We all share responsibility for the care and nurture of babies, so we all share responsibility for the existence of murderers. We may not like the thought of keeping people locked away until they die, but that does allow them the time to ponder on the reality of their crimes and to ask for forgiveness. We may not like it, but murderers are still human beings and need to be allowed to live to prevent the rest of us from becoming murderers.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Most people executed in America are black so it is used as a form of ethnic cleansing. America is one of the few countries that wants to remain free to execute their children. The death penalty has absolutely nothing to do with justice.
