I could be because of some different reasons. First the other person might be pushing their faith/religion onto the other person and it probably doesn't come off in the right way. So that could bother them and make it unattractive.
Second, people could just be ignorant and close-minded and don't understand why the other people do not have their religion. They believe that all people should have that set faith.

Because it casts doubt on their own faith. People are afraid of doubt.
Because people don't know when to mind their own business. Someone else's problems are always more interesting than one's own.
Because people band together in groups for safety and the other group is necessarily to be excluded at the least and perhaps hated just to solidify one's own group.
Because people are too quick to give precise answers to imprecise questions. Human ego drives us to think that we have the secret that nobody else does.
Because fear prevents us from opening our minds and allowing other points of view to shape our thoughts.

lack of faith in their own. If one is totally committed and faithful, the confidence in their own beliefs would completely overshadow the beliefs of others and not be an issue at all

No one, not even atheists, can be 100% sure that God doesn't exist.
Just in case there is a God, it's important to prepare a defense. The defense will be that God is unreasonable in expecting us to have faith.
The fact that other people have faith undermines our defense so we must try to show that those who have faith are acting irrationally.

It threatens their own faith - so I'm guessing their faith must be pretty weak.

because of their close-minded belief that only their faith will bring them to heaven and everybody else wont. thats why they are bothered that you are of different faith because you wont go to heaven with them.
i say, faith alone wont save our soul. its what we do that counts.

- because our beliefs are the foundation on which we build our existence. When someone begins to rock another person's foundation of existence, that person will do whatever it takes to prevent their foundation from crumbling.

Usually it comes down to lack of self-esteem, lack of faith in ones own beliefs, or just simple stupidity.
