That the major oil companies only have control of approx 15% of the worlds reserves? The other 85% is controlled by small, local outfits.

15% is quite a lot. I wasn't expecting the number to be that high. These are companies, after all, not nations. In any case what countries control most of the other 85%? Venezeula, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Niger, Myanmar? By "small local outfits," do you really mean state-run oil companies? And how many of these "small, local outfits" that oil companies work for or with themselves have highly exploitative policies? It is the oil companies who do business with these nations, providing financial support to many highly dictatorial and oppressive countries. I'm not saying that this may not be an unfortunate necessity to some degree, only that if the point of this question is to try and make oil companies sound good, I don't think it has succeeded. But if I am mistaken, please let me know.
realitycheck: And when you multiply that 9% by billions of dollars, how much profit do you have? 9 cents to the dollar times tens of billions of dollars is a lot of profit.
debraw: So we cannot criticize anything until we ourselves are absolutely perfect? That is not good reasoning. If you apply that way of thinking to any problem you end up making it impossible for anything to be solved. BTW I don't have a car or rely on anyone else for rides. But I see nothing wrong with those that do have cars pushing for actions against pollution or global warming.

It appears to me that many only echo sound bites and never really look into issues.
When I hear all the complaining about we went to war for oil and Americans are oil hungry, etc....I wonder do these individuals drive hybrid vehicles? Do they have solar power for there homes? If they do not have a hybrid will they go out tomorrow and buy a hybrid car even if it costs more? Do they take public transportation? When I ask these questions face to face it is amazing at how fast they shut up!

Please site your sources, because none of mine support that argument.
Petrobras, Pemex, Pertamina, PDVSA, Nigerian Nat’l Petroleum Co., Petronas, and NOC combined, control 23%, and that doesn't even include several major oil companies.
After that, Saudi Arabia alone controls 25%.
I am assuming by saying "small, local outfits", you are referring to smaller regional subsidiaries of the larger parent companies right??
But thanks for helping point out the people who will believe anything they are told, that supports right-wing agenda, without doing any of their own research. For that YOU GET A STAR!!

That's pretty interesting. That's probably why the US has to play ball with so many unsavory petty dictators and tyrants to get its energy.
I think we should end all oil business with the Middle East. Get all our oil from the Western Hemisphere and let Europe deal with the terrorists.

"Do people realize..." that a significant figure in the oil industry said to me (personally) that alternative fuels would never be seriously developed until all the oil and coal had been harvested?
That's really sad...for all of us.
Really tells you who is in control.
