im guessing something is clogged. what can i buy to fix this? an auger wont work because the way the sink is, you cant put anything non-liquid down there. it goes down very very slow. toilet water rises after flushing but wont go down all the way. its like something is holding it back from going down.

Well it isn't the "P" trap; though I'd remove it and check it anyway.

Somewhere in your plumbing you should have CLEAN OUT plugs,,,possibly in the 4 inch; outside of your house.

Most often now in PVC; they are a joint fitted to the sewage drain that allows for a threaded cap that can be removed even with a Crescent Wrench. From there you can run a snake in both directions; run a garden hose; or pressure washer; and test the results.

It may be that your sewage drain is corrupted in being broken through by root systems?

DON't add polutants to an already fragile eco system, but also Check all your VENT plumbing for blockage.

Often times it is tree roots that plug up main drainage pipe going out. If that is the case you would need to find the main drain access cover and rent a rooter to clear the lines. The other alternative is to pull up the toilet and run the rooter down that pipe and hope you get a clear shot. Either way, it can be a messy job. The time, uncertainty and cost of renting a rooter is about what it would cost to hire a plumber to do the job.

If water goes down any other drain with no problem, is internal. If nothing drains well, the problem is downstream from any of your fixtures.

Maybe you can't get a snake down the sink, but you should be able to get one down the toilet.. And if you can't, it isn't too big a deal to lift the toilet to get directly at the connection to the sewer.

Like the man said, look for cleanouts.

If you have a septic tank, it might be time to have it pumped out.
