I've taken on a Sportster. It runs fine, but the starter either isn't getting power or is needing to be replaced. I have tried to cross the studs on the solenoid. The lights don't dim and nothing changes. I am at a loss. Any help. I refuse to kick start this beast again, due to the fact, it kicks back and injures my calf.

Have tried to use a 12 volt car battery, and I'm not taking it to a shop, that is for yuppies and pukers!

After crossing the studs at the solenoid with no results, I'd say it's a bad solenoid.
Rebuild kits are available:

May need a new starter motor.
Remove it from the bike.
Using jumper cables - connect the (-) to a car battery and to the body of the starter motor.
Attach the (+) cable to the motor's terminal.
Hold the motor firmly in one hand.
Connect that cable to the (+) of the car battery.
The starter motor should spin fast enough and with enough torque, to want to jump out of your hand.
If the starter motor is bad, it won't draw any power from the battery and there would be no reason for the lights to dim.

First off you have a ironhead sportster, you NEED the factory service manual and parts list book. You can ask ironhead owners for advice at Yahoo Groups / ironhead garage , you'll find the group full of great info and pictures of their bikes.

all citys & most towns have generator/starter repair shops check the yellow pages. or you can get a new starter from J&Pcycles for under $200 or from jirehcycles for under $150.
if you get a case of sportster knee it will take months to get over it.

Remove the starter and drop by your dealership they should test the starter for you at a reasonable rate and see if you can get a shop manual it would have the rebuild guide in it trouble shooting guides etc.. I bought both Manuals when I bought My Buell H/D manuals are done very well.
the shop book and parts book would be a good investment if you are going to do the work yourself....

Good luck and ride safe

Try tapping on the starter motor with a hammer. It might have some crap on the armature.

try jump starting it with a car battery, or take it to a bike shop and have it checked out.
