It's fine to have this available, as long as you don't leave it in too long. If it gets slimey or grows white "fuzz" it's definitely time to take it out!

Also, not all lettuces are equal. Try to find types that are a darker green - romaine, kale, turnip tops, beet tops, mustard greens, collard greens, or dandelion (from your yard if you don't use chemicals and it's not too near a road). Avoid light colored lettuces like iceberg - these have less nutritional value.

You can also give them slices of cucumber and zucchini, or cooked peas and lima beans with the skin removed.

Its a very smart idea to make real vegetables and fruit available to your fish. It makes them very healthy. Lettuse is good as long as you thouroughly wash it and remove any insects that may have found their way onto it. I would also reccomend vegetables like cucumber and zucchini and fruits like pears and apples, but i seiriously warn against any acidic fruits and veggies like tomatoes and oranges.

Sure.. but!
If you get it from the grocery store, make sure to wash it thoroughly before putting it in your tank.
Don't let it sit in there for more than a few hours, or it will start to rot and spoil your water.
You can also try thin slices of zucchini.
