Download Open Office. It's a free version of open office that uses a lot of formats including all of Microsofts Word formats.

Once you downloaded it and installed it RIGHT click on the document and on the menu that popped out go to open with, and choose open office. When it opens in open office simply go to file: save as and then change the format you want to save it into where it says save as type. I recommend you save it into the Microsoft Word 2000/XP format and click on save and you're done. Hope that helps!!!

If you uninstall Ms works/word it will go to open by default in wordpad. If you click on a file right click you can go to "open with" and even set the default program In windows 7/8. The files that you say you could not edit they may be read only so right click on them and properties it will tell you if that is the case.

If you want to save as a Microsoft Word Document, you must have Word. So if you don't have Word, copy the file to a thumb drive and take it to a friends house who does have Word. Copy and paste the document into word and then resave it as a DOC.
