step (1)
Backup isn’t installed on XP Home by default. Insert your XP CD and browse to the \valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder. Double-click the NTBACKUP.MSI file to begin. Once the installation is complete, click Finish
.step (2)
Press Start, and then select All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then choose Backup. The Welcome to Backup or Restore Wizard window will appear, as shown above. Click Next.
step (3)
At the Backup and Restore screen, ensure that Back up files and settings is selected, and click Next. At the What to Back Up screen, select Let me choose what to back up and press Next.
step(4)
At the Items to Back Up screen, click My Computer, System State. This will display the System State backup’s components, including the Registry. Check the checkbox next to System State and then press Next.
step(5)
At the Backup Type, Destination and Name screen, click Browse to choose a folder where the backup should be saved. In the back-up name text box, give the backup a descriptive name and press Next.
step(6)
On the Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click Finish. Once the backup is complete, check the location specified to ensure that the System State back-up file specified exists.

Very simple. Open the registry editor and click "File" and then "Exprot". Pick a place to "save" the Registry backup, the desktop will do, and then run the cleaner. If something nasty happens to the registry, just click file and then "Import". Navigate to the "saved" copy of the registry and click "Ok". That will restore the "old" registry.

I use a program called ccleaner. I think the website is www.ccleaner.com. This program cleans the registry and gives you an option to back up the registry before it cleans it. I always backup the registry (it saves the backup anywhere you want) before it cleans.

Cleaning up your registry won't help in that case. Go through the computer files and delete what isn't needed. Remove programs you don't use, delete multimedia files you don't need, etc.
