You will need to get a few snails to be sure you have a male and female, or at least a female that's been with a male in the last few months. Unlike most snails, mystery snails (Pomacea bridgesii, which are the only types legally sold in the US) have separate males and females, although females are capable of storing sperm for a few months.

These only lay their eggs above the water line, so don't fill the tank all the wat to the top - leave about 1 inch without water. It's safest to remove the egg mass once it's laid if you want the babies - if it gets bumped and falls into the water, the babies will die within the egg mass.

Since the eggs have to have high humidity, it's best to create a humidity chamber for them. You can make this yourself with a disposable plastic food container (like the ziploc food storage containers) and some wide mesh (a bag that onions or potatoes comes in). Put about 1/2 to 1 inch of water in the container, then put the mesh over the top so it dips slightly in the middle, but doesn't touch the water. Place the egg mass on top of the mesh, then put the top on the container. The eggs may take 2-4 weeks to hatch (the warmer the temperature, the sooner the hatch), then the babies will crawl through the mesh and drop into the water. When this starts, just fish them out and put them into your tank.

Breeding snails is so easy you wont believe it. It only takes ONE mystery snail to have babies. They will lay them in tightly clumped jelly like bags around your tank and they will hatch into tiny white snails. When you buy your snail, you should start seeing little babies all around your tank within the month.

Be careful though, if your snails become a problem which they probably will, its very hard to get rid of them. You would have to clean the entire tank for eggs, remove all the gravel, clean the snails out and let it dry for a day to kill eggs, and then use anti snail liquids on the tank for a few days. Be absolutely sure your prepared for a million baby snails before you invest in just having one let alon breeding them!

If what you want is to breed them, just buy two, they get pregnant one another and the next thing you know is a bunch of snails eggs at the top of your tank.
