Buy one with good support. From personal experience, I can say that HP offers good, quick support.

However, having been on the lookout for a good deal for sometime, I recently purchased a Toshiba which I got for $399 and a free printer. It has Vista with only 512mb RAM - this makes it incredibly slow. I am in the process of getting another memory chip.

If you know nothing about them as you say, I suggest you take to the store someone who does. You don't want to pay megabucks for bells and whistles you will never use. Our local Sunday paper always carries ads from Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. They feature weekend and holiday specials which are "special." You just have to catch them and be at the store when it opens. Take your time, look around, and compare. Good luck.

Personally I would recommend Everex StepNote XT5000T $799.99
Pros: Great Price, awesome specs. Dedicated Video card, 17" screen and everything else you need, on top of fine performance. the additional slot for another hard drive is handy and the fact that it ships with an empty slot for another stick of ram allows for an easy upgrade to to 2GB.
Cons: Runs a little warm, but like others have stated and from my experiences, this is normal for a machine that is running a dedicated video card. besides that which i have no problem with, there is nothing negative to say.

I love dell, its cheap and you can get some of the better types of computer at cheap prices
I wouldnt suggest Vaio because in my opinion you are just paying for the brand
Dont touch Acer or anything with less than 1GB of Ram and a decent processer

HP (Windows): Pavillion, Compaq
Apple (Mac): MacBook, *possibly* iBook
Dell (Windows): Inspiron Notebook

These are *fairly* cheap, and very good products.
