My car won't start at all. Have tried all obvious areas - plugs etc but still nothing. I did top the oil up the other day there and although there hasn't been any problems since then, could it be the wrong oil type. If so is this easily fixed.

Some GM cars and trucks use an oil pressure switch that disables the fuel pump if there is no oil pressure.

Make sure there IS oil in it. and not a huge puddle under the car.

You failed to mention what you drive. That would have help out a lot.
One thing you might want to try is disconnect the negative battery cable for a couple minutes to clear any stored "shut down" codes in the computer.

Maybe the flashing oil lamp means the computer isn't sensing any oil pressure from the engine's oil pressure sending unit sensor. Then the computer says you can't start the car because you don't have any oil pressure and it keeps your ignition from firing the spark plugs to start the car. I assume your engine is cranking over ok, but just won't fire (start) and run. Any motor engine oil of any description wouldn't account for the problem. It's a coincidence in my opinion, and would have failed anyways. Look in your owner's manual in case it says what a flashing red oil light means on your car.

the oil in it wont make it not start, you have something else causing that to happen, you need to check and see if you can hear the fuel pump running and verify that you do have gas getting to the engine, also make sure the engine is getting fire to the plugs,if it is,then it should start, you may have to get some one with a scanner to scan this one for you and see if it has any problems ,a good scanner will at least give you some trouble codes to work with if there is any, that may give you a good starting point, good luck, with it,next time try and give a make and model for this, this helps a lot in answering a question on them.

well if the car isnt doing anything check you battery cables and clean them, then try it.... make sure you clean in the loops and the battery terminals, if the car is turing over but not starting then take it to a shop and have them scan the computer for problems could be something simple.
