CO2 in the atmosphere is an important part of the carbon cycle. It also plays a very important role in keeping the planet warm and habitable. The issue with CO2 these days is there is more in the atmosphere that the Earth really needs to supply the carbon cycle and keep the planet warm. The debate is whether or not this buildup is man's fault or a natural cycle. Either way, the planet has experienced warming and cooling cycles for the last 4.6 billion years so in my opinion we need to worry about how to deal with a warming planet rather than getting rid of CO2.
