Try checking out of a hotel in the Loire region of France and having to explain that you bought the $100 bottle of champagne and not the $600 bottle of Crystal without being able to speak French.

Foreign language study helps to develop further the language area in the brain (in the left hemisphere) and tone discrimination (right hemisphere). It is also a great way to learn the parts of speech and comparative grammar.
