Actually progressive is an older term than liberal. The tag liberal was used more by the neocons than anyone else to describe their opponents. The term Socialist is a lie often used by the right. They are upset when someone calls them Fascists but they have no problem calling others Socialists. The thing is neither is true. But the cowardice of some on the right shows they can dish but cant take the name calling.

They are progressives, since the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed by President Johnson.
Health Care for all Americans sounds very progressive don't you think?

Read Webster's definition of liberalism: "A political philosophy based on belief in PROGRESS, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties."
Read Webster's definition of conservatism: "A political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change."
It sounds to me like there's a little bit of "conservatism" and "liberalism" in ALL of us! So why keep up with the childish name-calling, the juvenile insults, and the insipid hatred and bigotry when this nation needs to unify itself and come together for the greater good??
I find it preposterous that liberals and conservatives attach artificial labels to themselves without even knowing the true definitions of the terms, but - instead - following the boorish propaganda of their own person 'heroes' - Al Franken or Rush Limbaugh. Citizens need to think for themselves instead of listening to the Hitleresque banter of media 'talking heads' who get rich off their listeners' ignorance. -RKO- 09/30/07

I don't know why liberals want to be called progressives. They've probably realized that being called a liberal is a bad thing. They don't want people to be self reliant, because they want a big government that taxes a lot. If more people were willing to do things on their own, & didn't ask for handouts from the government, then taxes would be lower.

Progressive?
Their policies are REGRESSIVE.
They want to take us back a couple of Centuries to a time when elite Governors ruled and the average citizen had no power to resist the directives of the State.
Our Founding Fathers set up a system designed to keep power in the hands of the citizen. They want to put the power BACK into the hands of the RULING class.
That is regressive.

Actually communist and socialist is what morons like you called them, not what they called themselves. Anyone who thinks socialism=communism=liberalism needs to take poly sci 101, but I guess you can't, since that would require you to get past the 6th grade first.
