I'm looking for very detailed & pretty much dummy proof directions. I've looked on the web, and can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Then you have not looked good enough. When you are attempting to do something using microsoft products it would be smart to check the microsoft knowledge base.
You did not mention what VPN server software you are using so I cant help with exact instructions.

Also a Note. You can only use Remote Desktop with XP Pro, not Home. You do not mention what version you are using so thats why I mention this.
