I am thinking of buying a car with a dent and some resulting rust from the damage on the quarter panel. It is located on the passengers side, at the bottom edge of the quarter panel near the seal of the door. The door works fine, I am just worried what the total cost of repair will not be worth it. I don't know anything about body work :(

just to get that fixed and painted it will cost you anywhere from 5-800 bucks ,that quarter cab be fixed, but that's the least you,ll get by with on repairing it,if you decide on buying it make sure they knock a lot off the cost of the car, because your going to be without it for at least a week, and that's a big inconvenience, but the good thing is ,that it can be fixed,id think this one through real good before i bought it, it may not be worth fixing,it all depends on the price of the car, good luck with it.

Your question is like asking "How high is up?" There are too many variables to give you a reasonable answer, as there could be structural damage that is not seen from the outside of the car.

Ask the seller if you can take the car to a local body shop to get an estimate for the cost of repairs.

Most body shops will give you a free estimate for any repairs. If you decide to fix the repair make sure that you carefully inspect the repaired area. I've seen some pretty crappy repairs and paint jobs.

Good Luck

It looks like just surface rust. Just clean it off, primer and paint with a can of touch up. Primer and paint are available at most auto parts stores such as Auto Zone and Advance auto.
The dent an be hammered flat and smoothed with body filler. Then prime and paint. Cost less than $50.

http://www.maaco.com will repair it for less than $500, and you can get the whole car painted too for a total of $1,000. You can also just apply a paint over rust sealer and use touch up paint to make it look half decent for less than $80 yourself.
