Have you ever looked inside a music box, and seen the cylindar with the little knobs on it? It sort of looks like braille. Well, there's a BIG one inside a player piano. It turns and there are little metal strips that get 'twanged' just like in a music box. The keys on the piano are also connected to the metal strips so that when they hit the right little knob...the piano key is also depressed so it looks like a ghost is playing. ;0)

It works using a music recording system called the piano roll. You can find out everything you need to know by pointing your browser at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_roll and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reproducing_piano I hope this helps.
