Hello is namaskāra, namastē
or it could be svāgata kī abhivyakti kā aṅgrējī śabda

I always use namaste. Everyone always knows what I am saying.

Thank you is dhanyavad

It depends upon which part of India you are visiting as different languages are being used in different parts of India.
If you are visiting North India you can use the following words in Hindi:

For Hai ; Namasthe.
Thank you : Shukriya
Sir : Saab
Madam : Mem Saab

As Evaniah says, there are loads of local dialects but Hindi should be ok. If you go to that restaurant more often you could ask them. They should be happy to tell you.

I had a look to see if there are speech engines around and this one seems to have Hindi:

So you could see if that will help.

They have over 20 different languages, it depends on where you are going, or who you are talking to. You need to find out, if its urdu,hindi,gujarati,punjabi,marathi,tamal,telegu.....or what ever. I think hindi is kind of known by everyone along with their own language though. And most know english too, by the way.
