You're only 38 weeks, so I don't see what the rush is to do anything right now. Your doctor cannot physically open your cervix with his fingers because it would rip- he is probably talking about stripping your membranes, which can cause an increase in contractions and possibly stimulate active labor. But don't get your hopes up, because it doesn't always work, especially if you're a little early as you are.

They don't use any kind of pain relief for this. It can be uncomfortable, lots of pressure, especially if your cervix is high in the vagina. It only takes a few seconds though. Then you'll be sent back home to wait it out again.

I'm sure you're having back pain, but it isn't back labor if you aren't in labor - and it isn't true back labor unless you know the baby is facing the wrong direction - sunny side up instead of facing towards your spine.

Some women naturally feel contractions in their back even when it isn't true back labor.

Keep hydrated and rest. Even mild dehydration can cause an increase in contractions.

Your baby might still not be ready to make an entrance for another couple of weeks so even though it's hard be patient. Nothing can open your cervix except for dilation which is happening gradually anyway. And it's too soon to strip your membranes. Also, just because your back is hurting doesn't mean it's "back labor." You only have that in REAL labor. Just try hot and cold compresses or massage at this point to relieve the pain and take a heating pad when you go to the hospital.

Start resting because you will need it for labor and for when you have a new baby in the house!

I have never had this done btu I would go over other options such as waiting. Personally I would want to wait unless there were harmful risks for the baby or myself in doing so! You are 2 weeks away from your due date...if you can try and wait (again if there is another optio). Maybe even opt to have a c-section if you feel that it would lead to that anyways!!

Had this done for a surgical procedure in the Dr. office, they put a scope in and looked. My Dr. numbed it with and injection, didn't hurt much at all and neither did the procedure. Ask you Dr. for something if you are afraid of the pain.
