Those letters were heavily censored.
Cold. Mud. Rats. Need new socks. Want to eat a cake, food is terrible here. X did something funny, tied his trousers to a stick and waved the back seat to the Huns, got it back holed... Saw a plane. We received shells, Y had his harmonica holed. Hope for some time at the back. We lost 15 men in last attack.
As you can see there's plenty you can write. How much of it was received after censorship... who knows.

If it's a letter home from the trenches you could write very little. Everything was heavily censored.
You were not allowed to write about where you were or who you were with or what the weather was like.
