If there is a Jo-Ann fabrics near you, you will find these in the costume or prom sections.

What are you trying to make? Are you looking for a knit (stretchy) fabric or a woven (like quilting fabric)? Michael Miller has some fantastic metallic cotton woven fabric called Fairy Frost, and you probably can find an online dealer at their website: http://www.michaelmiller.com

Next, from my experience:
Have you tried http://www.fabric.com? Shipping is $2.95 for your first order. I've enjoyed the quality I've ordered from there.

I have also heard good stuff about the following places:
http://www.wazoodle.com (you can get a membership for even better prices)
http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com (a really good selection of fabric)
http://www.joann.com (check out http://www.dealcatcher.com first for a changing selection of coupons)
http://www.ebay.com (especially if you know what you're looking for)

Two reliable online fabric sources:

www.hancockfabrics.com
www.fabric.com

It's not like buying fabric in a store, though -- you can't feel the fabric, and the color won't be true on your monitor.

Good luck.

you can try http://www.denverfabrics.com/
you can order swatches for a penny from them and coupons for %off when ordering yardage. Their pictures on line are pretty close from what I have dealt with
hope this helps, good luck
