Hi,
I loved Amsterdam when I went but was with my parents and only 14 or so, so didn't do much pubbing, clubbing etc.... go to Anne Franks house and along the canals if you want some culture...
If you are just there for some fun, there are plenty of pubs and clubs around the red light district.
When I went, I stayed in this hotel:

It was very nice.
My mum and dad took me so I don't know how they arranged it but we got the ferry to France and then drove to Amsterdam so should think it was all booked separately

A lot depends on how much you have to spend. You're better staying in the centre of Amsterdam, you won't be far from interesting things, and the public transport is extremely good and reliable.
While you're there the red light district is good place to visit, better to go at night but leave your camera behind. Things will get nasty you start flashing your camera around in that area. Anne Franks house is another must see - you will truly come away remembering!
I think you will be better off researching and booking individual hotels and flights.
I used to live in Amsterdam so if you need some good places to eat then just give me an 'e' - however one place is the pancake house on the single, its pretty central but I can't remember the name of it - very good and not expensive. Another is a restaurant BICE, this is on the Stadhouderskade 7-9 - its not far from the Vondel Park. As for drinking, there are many bars and all pretty save to go into without the worry of getting into a fight. People are there for a good time and a joyous evening....unlike here!

Most of the action happens around Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein as far as nightlife is concerned. Some of the major museums are at Museumplein. Mainstream shopping can be done at Kalverstraat.
But Amsterdam is a really small city and everything is pretty much within walking distance of each other or at least easily reachable by public transportation. So locationwise anything in the city center is good. (Just don't stay in hotels near the aiport area)
Hotels in Amsterdam can be pretty expensive, so if you don't want to spend too much go for a seperate ticket (buy it from one of the cheap airlines directly instead of a travel agency) and book at a hostel.

If you find a package with a central Amsterdam hotel, take it.
If not, EasyJet flies to Schiphol, Amsterdam Airport for little, and an hotel is easy to find. (Do not fly to an other airport, as they are hours away from Amsterdam.)
From the airport it is a 20 minutes train trip to the center of town.
There are many hotels in the center, walking distance from the railway station "Centraal station".
Around Leidse plein, or Rembrands plein is also good.
Here is a link to a map:
http://www.amsterdam.info/map/
This site also helps you finding things to do and places to visit:
http://www.amsterdam.info/
The museum list is good, each museum has an introduction in English, and a link to its own website.
We always say that everything in Amsterdam is happening within the circle of canals, but the main museums are just on the outside of the circle, as are the Zoo and the Vondelpark, the most visited park in town.
Little corner pubs, called cafe, you will find all over the center of town, restaurants are a little more concentrated, although you can find them in the most unlikely places to, good areas for eating are around Leidseplein and on the Zeedijk.
The map above has a search bar.
Red light district is next to Zeedijk towards the Dam (square) and coffee shops can be found all over town.
Clubs and night life is concentrated around Leidse plein.

Haven't been to Amsterdam in years so can't advise on where the action is. Not sure whether it is now cheaper to book a package or book flights and hotel separately. Most packages will assume you will share a room.

Usually I do everything by Expedia, but this time it was cheaper to book the flight and hotel direct with each. We flew with BA and stayed at the Moevenpick city centre (although it's not right in the city centre!)
BA often have great deals so check them out.
We went for August bank holiday and absolutely loved it. My best recommendation for when you are there is to just walk around everywhere. You find the best places down little alleys.
For deals try Expedia, but also check out Trip Advisor for hotel reviews, these are often quite frank and you can actually contact the people who wrote them via email to ask questions.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed at the Amsterdam Hilton.
He even sang about it in "The Ballad Of John & Yoko".

As near to the Van Gogh Museum as you can afford to get is my advice - we got a cheapy deal and had to walk miles to get to anything!
Although the trams are good - once you know how to use them!
