Why dose water has a high heat capacity ? Because water has a very strong intermolecular interaction called hydrogen-bonding. One needs to provide a significant amount of energy to break the hydrogen-bonding. On the other side, the temperature of a material is deeply related to the interatomic, intramolecular, and intermolecular interaction. Breaking massive hydrogen bonds indicates a temperature increase. Therefore, water has a high heat capacity.
