He who sleeps has no weight on there shoulders, he who is awake has pain an suffering. That is so true as we can all escape the troubles of life if we sleep, an we know that it will return once we wake......

It sucks to wake up because the majority of your consciousness is suffering. In a concentration camp I'm sure that’s more true.

It appears to me he meant that he felt that most of the time if he wasn't dreaming that he was suffering greatly.

it means that there was so much day to day suffering ...sllep was the only escape...i can understand his reasoning...considering his circumstances
