in the book "A Separate Peace" gene indicates that he did not particulary want to go to the society meetings, but he still always went why? to show off?

Gene was very aware of how he "looked" to others -- whether he was in the right group, or being seen with the right kids. I think he went to the society meetings so people would simply see him there, and he would be "in." I don't think he was showing off at all. Instead, he just wanted to be painted with the same brush as the kids who were socially adept.
