Two months early would mean about 32 weeks gestation. Most preemies (at least at the hospital where I work) normally aren't able to go home until they assess at 35 weeks. I'm sure that there are always exceptions to the rule and every child is different, but I would seriously doubt a 32 weeker would go home in a week, but hey.....anything's possible. Also, unless they were really off on the due date, or you didn't see a dr until late in the pregnancy when due dates are less accurate, you can expect at least 3 weeks or so in the hospital if not more. Sometimes it can take longer if the baby gets an infection or gets sick.

It depends on the size, weight, and health of the baby. Usually a 2 month preemie would stay for several weeks to make sure everything is as it should be. If this baby was sent home after a week, he must be in good shape. He has every chance to be 100% healthy, the same as any full-term baby.

Yes, he can be 100% healthy. If his lungs are fine and he weighs at least 1800 grams, it is possible. I saw a baby discharged who was 33 weeks gestation and was only in NICU for a week. A 32 weeker would be stretching it a bit, perhaps he was less than 2 months early. Premature infants are at much higher risk of illness and complications.

it really depends on the health and size of the baby. two months though is very premature and i would have problems believing it is going to be strong enough to sustain life without some help for a while. it's lungs, digestive tract, and reflexes are going to be extremely under developed and i would think it could take a month or two in the hospital to be able to go home.

of course it depends on each case-- a child may well be perfectly healthy... however typically by that time a child hasn't fully developed their lungs or grown fat. so usually (most likely) a child will stay in the hospital for awhile before coming home.

If someone miscalculated the gestation period or if the baby weighs at least 5 pounds and is eating and breathing on its own.
