The mesosphere is the coldest part of the atmosphere because very little solar radiation is absorbed in this layer.

The mesosphere lies under the thermosphere. The thermosphere is heated by solar radiation and the impact of tiny meteoric particles. Although the gases in the thermosphere can get heated to 450 deg C, the particles of gas are so thinly spread that heat transfer is minimal. The mesosphere cannot therefore benefit from the heat that is in the thermosphere and is effectively insulated from it.
