My friend and I crochet afghans for kids at a local hospital, and we're always on the lookout for free or very cheap yarn to use, and so I was wondering if anyone has any they'd be willing to donate. I live in the Twin Cities area, and would be willing to drive a distance to pick it up. If you live too far away, I'd be willing to pay postage for you to mail it to me. It needs to be acryllic yarn so that it's washable. Color doesn't matter, I'll take anything, full new skeins, partially used, old, new, etc. Thanks for your consideration.

Have you talked to Project Linus?

Project Linus is a non-profit organization that gives new handmade blankets and quilts to sick or traumatized children.

They frequently have workshops and events to make blankets (knit, crocheted, quilted) and they accept donations of both finished items and raw materials.

For more information, visit their website at www.projectlinus.org

If you contact your local group, I'm sure they'd be very willing to accommodate you. There is a group serving Greater Minneapolis, and you can reach them through the contacts list on the website. Since this is probably someone's home, I won't post the number or e-mail address.

I don't know how to get free yarn - although that would be excellent! (If you figure it out let me know). However a great way to get a large quantity of yarn for cheap is to buy an old sweater, from a goodwill and take it apart. For about $2-3 you end up with about 5-6 skeins of yarn. Of course there are some tricks, not every sweater is ideal for this. You have to check for good seems (ones you can cut along to take the sweater apart without cutting into the rows). I believe there are youtube videos demonstrating - it's hard to explain. Also make sure you find a sweater with thicker yarn. Don't feel too bad about tearing down a sweater you're giving it new life and donating it so instead of one ugly sweater you're making multiple items that help multiple people! I am currently in the process of re-purposing yarn from an old sweater.

You may have better luck (and attract fewer crazies) by advertising locally. I always get great results from Craigslist. http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/mn

Your newspaper probably has a section where you can write in and make requests like this for free. Good luck. It is a great project!

Have you freecycle yet? The group in my area is quite small, but I've seen free yarn offered many times. Here's the one for Minneapolis:

It has over 11,000 members!
