Whenever someone is hopeless about the outcome of the future, whether they live or die becomes irrelevant. Dealing with a hopeless means that the enemy will put their life on line. Why bother after all, it is already/believed known that the future has no hope.

Defeating an enemy gives them nothing to live for and a good reason to retaliate even worse than the original conflict.

I agree, when one is hopeless, they don't care whether they live or die. They believe that their future holds nothing for them.

Defeating an enemy makes them hopeless therefore more willing to put their life on the line, making them fearless. So that is a good point. It is good to know whether your enemy is hopeless because in understanding your enemy, you will have a better understanding of what your course of action should be.
