Her hair was blonde as a child, but reddish brown from her early teens. She had it dyed blonde in early 1946 over a period of a few weeks, as she had just become a model and blondes got more work... In 1949 it was more red, as she couldn't afford to dye it properly, but that same year she got a part in The Asphalt Jungle, (in which she is totally blonde) that led to more parts, more fans, more money and more... blondishness.
So basically, she was a natural blonde in her childhood, a natural (reddish)brunette in her teens, and a bleached blonde from when she was 19 and onwards.
