Hi,
If the ball hits the batsman's leg outside the line of the stumps, and the fielder catches it, then it is not out.
The ball should have touched either the bat or the glove of the batsman in which the bat is in contact, for the batsman to be out.
Your brother might have seen a ball where the ball hit the pad, and a fielder catches it, and the umpire had given it out. So, I guess your brother is confused with that. Well, if that is the case, the umpire had given the batsman out for a LBW. Because, if it had hit the batsman in line with the stumps, he is a goner for LBW. The fielder catching the ball has nothing to do there.
Thanks! Hope i helped :)

As per Law 32 the batsman is given out "Caught" when a fielder catches the ball before it bounces and after the batsman has struck it with the bat or it has come into contact with the batsman's glove while it is in contact with the bat handle. Hence if the ball hits the leg of batsman and fielder catches the ball, the batsman is "Not out".
