AVG is a good free antivirus....maybe you have a spyware....
Download Spybot Search&Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Update everything then run it
THEN...download Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Update everything and run it
Try to look what is running when you start your computer. Use the ProcessExplorer from sysinternals (microsoft bought the company some times ago) but it's a very good tool
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx
Try to identify the process that use too much CPU time....
Try also to Defrag your hard drive, be sure you have enough room on the drive.
Else, verify that your RAM memory works, at the startup (POST screen), you should how much RAM you have. If it's less than before, you may have a defective memory you may have to replace. Verify also that the speed of the CPU didn't change.
I hope you didn't change anything in the BIOS....if you know what to do, verify the caches are on, and the shadow memory are also on....deactivating those options makes your computer run very slow.
Good luck

The following programs should help you out:
==============================
Download install and run the freeware program called "Malware Scan" which is an Adware, Spyware, Key Logger, Dialer, Hijacker, Trojans and thiefware removal utility. It also removes Bundled spyware.
Malware Scanner Home Page:

==============================
Also try this one called Ad-aware, which is free for personal use: http://www.lavasoft.com
==============================
Download and install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Try using Ad-aware by Lavasoft (there is a free version). It will take you a long time to download, and probably longer to install and use it. You will have to use it mulitple times (likely), then you will probably have to use it in Safe mode (start your computer in safe mode by holding down F8 while your computer is starting). your monitor will likely look very weird while in safe mode, but this may allow you to get rid of more viruses.
You may also want to get spybot (another free program). Be warned of three possibilities:
1) I once had to go back and forth between ad-aware, spybot, normal mode, safe mode , and also find the processes running on my computer to identifiy and rid myself of one pesky piece of spyware. It took about 6 hours worth of work.
2) once my computer got so bad that the only solution was to pull off my files onto CD and then completely erase the hard drive and re-install windows.
3) It is possible that after 7 years something serious is failing. Part of your memory or hard disk could be bad; your computer could be overheating, or other less likely things.
Good luck!

I use Stop Sign anti-virus, and when you sign up for it, they let you use a program called Veloz. It helps speed up your computer. I believe Stop Sign is great. If your downloading something, they will tell you if it is a virus. Here is the website
http://www.stop-sign.com/se/se333.php?uid=3f0029ef4adde542432d71b8470e98f1&bit_mask=0&bit_sample=3841096111&ver=online&pg=%26mss_spin%26mss_spin%26se332b&SV=se332b&n=d_mss
If this doesnt help, when you boot your computer, put in the windows 2000 recovery disk, and just reinstall the Operating System. In the begging, if you put it in when it first turns on, it will say press any key to boot from CD. (the cd is recovery disc.)
(and your eacceleration membership gives you stop sign anti virus, a firewall, Veloz, to speed a Slow Computer, and many more.)
Or if your internet explorer wont work, try Mozilla firefox, I love it!

Good Luck!

AVG is a great antivirus, but it will not, as with other AV programs, svan for spyware/trojans. Visit http://www.safer-networking.net and grab Spybot. Scan and clean what it finds. I'm sure it will be a ton of things.

AVG is anti virus software, and it sounds like it did it's job, but you also need to run a of good "spyware removal tools". I like Spybot and Adaware. You can download them at the following web sites.
Adaware

Spybot S&D
