Of course I’m concerned.

Based on the cost of living index comparing the cost of a gallon of gas the year I graduated high school (1959) which was about 25 cents, today’s cost per gallon should be about $1.70. Right now its about $2.75 per gallon.

While the cost of crude oil impacts this to some degree it doesn’t represent that large of a increase. There is plenty of crude oil in the ground within the boundaries of the United States which would bring the price of crude oil down to a reasonable price, but much of it we cannot drill for due to court decisions.

However, even if drill it would not significantly change the availability of gas because no new refineries have been built in nearly 30 years, and again this is due to court decision.

We also can use coal for vehicle fuel by converting it to a form of crude oil (available through current technology) but court decisions also stop this approach.

There is so much coal within the boundaries of the United States that if it was the single source of energy it would supply us for a minimum of two hundred years and maybe far longer.

Augmenting such energy sources with wind, hydroelectric, shale oil, as well as the beginning agriculture energy sources, the United States should be energy independent right now and prices easily within the range of the 1950s.

The reason that we aren’t in such a position is those who continually take energy projects to court to stop them from proceeding to conclusion. While these individuals (and organizations) may be sincere, their efforts constrain available energy sources and increase the pressure on pricing forcing them upward.

In other words, we are our own worse enemy.

Worried? You bet I am, but my worry is focused on those who are stopping our technological advancing in the field of energy production. If they continue to succeed in their efforts we will slowly slide down into an energy short culture and well on our way to a third world economy.

A gallon of milk is more expensive then a gallon of gas. I try not to be to concerned because I really dont think there is anything we can do to change it. It does stink though. My husband just recieved a promotion last week at work. He got a company vehicle and we no longer have to pay for gas for him to travel an hour to work and then back again. We figured it out to be basically like having a $2.00 and hour raise not including his regular pay increase just by not having to pay for gas. My kids are stunned when we talk about gas being under a dollar a gallon. Now for heating oil we can do something things differently like fixing drafts, putting plastic over the windows and insulate the windows but honestly it helps only a little. Been getting cold in New England at night recently and I so want to turn on my heat on the cold mornings but just bundle up till the sun comes through the windows to warm it up. Hoping to get through 1 more month of leaving heat off.

Only from a standpoint of how high fuel prices affect other products I buy in the cost of transporting them. I have been riding a bike for the last 18 years so I don't have to worry about a fuel budget.

Are you aware that the prices will never go down again?

This isn't a temporary or momentary thing.

Are you concerned enough to support politicians who want to conserve, and develop new energy sources instead of fighting wars over the remaining oil?

I am dead serious aboutthis.

Odd how few answers you get here.

Either people are being 'pragmatic' and accepting the prices (perhaps they know that we pay less than any other nation); or they are just [plain kidding themselves and think this problem will solve itself if we pretend.

Given the US mentality, I suspect elements of both play into this.

gas costs have been given out of hand with the universal public of congress becomming democratic and that they've been too busy attempting to discern a thank you to construct the occasion returned so they'd get a greater suitable shot of having the Whitehouse back after bill's wild escapades shot'em down in scancal...Congress grew to become the President right into a 'lame duck' and then went to artwork on their occasion development marketing campaign and forgot appropriate to the job of serving the human beings who elected them...neglecting the screams that gas replaced into getting out of hand, they grew to become a blind eye until the priority DID get out ot hand for authentic.....Now with Oil going at $143.00+ in step with barrel, there is not any longer lots they'd do until they want to soothe Iran like the administration did North Korea, in basic terms massive difference there, North Korea has no oil. (Obama ws a dem senator and area of the fiasco).
