As a mother of 3 little girls, two under the age of 2 i am scratching my head as to why the FDA are doing this.
Right, now i see it applied only here in the U.S no sure what's happening in England.
U.S. health experts on Friday urged the federal Food and Drug Administration to consider banning the sale of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for young children.
The products include approximately 800 popular medicines that are sold in the United States under names like Toddler's Dimetapp, Triaminic Infant and Little Colds, The New York Times reported.

Now, i give my 20m/o & 3y/o Tylenol
I give them a touch under the recommended limit when they get their shots, have fevers due to colds, teething and allergies.
So if they remove all cold medicines, isn't this going to cause more harm to a child than not?

This is based on 123 deaths bewtween 1969 and 2006.

That will be the straw that broke the camels back If they do that.
With health care the way it is in this country, most cannot afford to go to the doctor when sick.
If they take away over the counter drugs there will be civil unrest.

There are very serious drugs in OTC cold meds, sedating drugs particularly, which can cause death in infants and toddlers.

Unfortunately there are very IGNORANT mothers in this world, some who even use those types of meds to shut their kids up because they cry too much.

No child under TWO should get any kind of meds whatsoever without a doctor's approval.

Firstly, suppressing a cough is a TERRIBLE thing for a child with asthma. A cough brings up MUCOUS from the lungs which if it isn't brought up will turn to infection and pneumonia, or they could die because they literally drown in thier own mucous or their airways tighten up till they are completely closed. Suppressing the cough it is the worst thing you can do. Kids cough because of a) nasal drip, b) irritation to the throat, or c) because they are coughing up mucous from the lungs or from the drip.

When a cough stems from ASTHMA you should never suppress it with cough meds. You need PUFFERS, Ventolin and Flovent type drugs to handle the problem, and this should be assessed by a doctor and you should go to the ER when your child is coughing uncontrollably especially with a wet, gurgly cough. Even a dry spasmatic cough would benefit from the use of VENTOLIN which relaxes the muscles and is totally harmless, than cold meds which really don't do much more than sedate.

I don't think it's tough luck on kids who get sick. I think it's called responsible government and it 's time they stepped up. I personally, have never seen any of the products you mentioned sold anywhere in Canada.

I spent many nights in the ER room with my daughter due to asthma. I never, ever, ever gave her cough meds nor was it ever the right medicine.

A little Vicks vaporub and cold air humidifying mist goes a long way. I would often sit in the bathroom with the shower on HOT and the door closed and let the hot mist fill the room. This was also something that helped, or even the cold air on a winter night. I would bundle her up and sit on the front porch.

I think the worst thing mothers can do is overmedicate their kids. Let a doctor assess whats going on. Better you spend $100 on a good stethoscope and let a doctor let you listen to their chest when he says they are congested, so you know what to look for, and look for these signs yourself.

All those cold meds are bad, and again it's just the pharma companies tapping into people's ignorance without a care of the consequences.

The pharma companies get away with this BS in the USA because niether insurance companies or pharma companies are under the governments control. It's time the govt stepped up and DICTATED to them what they can and cannot do.

PS:

As for the view of the person above me, this is EXACTLY what is wrong with the health care system in the USA.

People should NOT have to me self-medicating with drugs that are harmful when they don't have any clue what they have.

If a doctor gave you the wrong drug you would sue them. If you kill yourself they will just laugh and you (all the way to the bank).

I realize you are stuck between a rock and a hard place but unfortunately, Americans refuse to acknowledge how bad off they are and continue to inflict much self-harm because of the way their government is. And it's the government's fault, make no mistake about it. But the people too, because they are brainwashed and in denial.

Kids have been getting sick for decades, if not centuries. And they haven't always had conventional medicine to get them better. So what do you do? Give them lots of hot liquids, but NO milk, as that actually increases mucous production. Hot tea with agave nectar (a low glycemic sweetner similar to honey). Hot vegetable broth or a noodle soup. A hot shower works. There's Emergen-C vitamin C packets that you mix with water (www.alacer.com). Orange juice is always good.

I know it sucks when you're sick, and it's got to suck when your kids are sick, but medicine or no medicine, they will get better in time.

I'm sure there is a new product waiting in the wings to fill the void and suck in the money.
