Why did people of the neolithic revolution most likely paint on like the cave walls and stuff?

People started to settle at that time and they wanted to leave something behind for future generations. Since they could not write they drew their storys.

Some of it was with religiouse thought, but most of the drawing found where of hunting partys and the animals that where common.
