Figure out what your talents are and what you like to do best and then see if there's a market or demand for that service. I do home repairs and remodelling/handyman stuff and have found plenty of demand for it on my own with little advertising...word of mouth brings in lots of work if you do a good job....make sure your customers are happy and benefit from your talents. Success is a matter of sticking with it.

What skill sets do you have?
Always successfull are the large name national (international) franchises. So the burger chains, chicken chains or doughnut chains. These are almost always a sure fired way to make money and you can get an area assigned so you control all new shops in that area. (large intial costs).
Otherwise what are you good at? What do you like to do? What do you want to do? These are the underlying questins that will help in the success of the business.
Low cost is the consulting companies. Do you know a job, system or otherwise really well? LOw initial startup and all you need is a few customers to get going. Charge hourly and for travel to them and there you go. Work 5 hours a day if you want.
Next is an outside trainer. Again usually low costs to setup but can be a nice ongoing income as many companies have high turnover. Trucking companies do this as they then don't have the internal costs.
If you have the accounting skills and know an integrated computer accounting program then you can become a program consultant and only requires buying the program and taking a course from the mfr to be certified. Now you setup the program and train the customers in it. Usually pays around low of $30/hour to $100/hour.
Many stores can do well but location is the key factor for most. As they deal in cash though they are a target for robbery.
Good luck

As someone whose last home based business and self employment venture did $300 million in revenue its first 5 years, I would be more inclined to listen to me than most of the other answers you've been given.
Here are some criteria: 1) Look for a product that is new, different, and unique that would be in big demand; 2) a product that is affordable for the masses; 3) preferably a product that people could sample so that no selling skills would be needed; 4) a product that targets a rapidly growing market (timing is everything!); 5) look for an opportunity where you can not only earn an income on your efforts but also on the efforts of others (it's called leverage-this way if something happens to you and you cannot continue to work, you still earn income-that's called working smart!) 6) look for an opportunity that does not require a large upfront cost (no more than $500)-you do have to spend some money to make money! 7) look for an opportunity that you can work from home so as to minimize overhead 8) be sure that there will be people to work with you and that they have tools available for you build a successful business such as websites, onlines systems, weekly calls, training, etc.)
Oh, I could go on and on...Here's the good news! I've found something that meets all of those criteria and more!

you like an accountant and without delay. do no longer attempt to grace this clutter out on your very own or 2d guess any it. PAYE bears no relation to being self employed and there may well be an accountability to sign in as self employed interior 3 months of being so.

I wouldn't bother, you will not make a success of a business unless you know something about it.
