I connect to the internet through my university's VPN in my halls. The only problem with it is that they can't open it up for us to play games due to, "security reasons". Is there a way around this i.e. changing what ports the games use to match the VPN?

Well the simple answer is NO.
It is your schools network and they get to allow what they choose to pass into the system. Most schools, businesses, etc have had to "lock down" traffic just to allow the things that are needed for the school or the business. Games take alot of bandwidth and that costs. (Not to mention the extra security risks and there are many.)

Best answer would be, get your own internet line!

I know that is not what you wanted to hear but that is just the facts.
