Yes. Sober 9 years. This doesn't mean I'm a "former" alcoholic, though; it simply means I'm sober.
I started drinking at 13.
I stopped drinking because my life was sheer hell and I couldn't take it anymore.
I drank for 25 years.

I use to do drugs and drink a lot, but I wasn't a drug addict nor an alcoholic because I could stop when I wanted. I started because it made me feel better when I felt depressed.
I stopped because it made me feel weak, as in I had to rely on something other than myself to get through life. I was my own motivation.
Took me about 2-3 years until I realized I wanted to stop.

I started doing things like that to attempt to fill a void in my life. I always said people do things like that cause something is missing from their lives. A job, spouse, money, whatever.. It's cause people want to feel good instead of dwelling on what they consider a negative situation in their lives. What motivated me wasn't the 7 years in jail I did or the threat of going back. What motivated me after 14 years of using was that I finally looked at my life and realized that it revolved around using. That's not me. I want to be about something. I haven't had a drink in almost a year now! And I don't miss it cause my life has meaning in other areas. It didn't at first, but kick the drugs, be about something, ANYTHING, and I promise you won't be sad anymore. GOOD LUCK.

NO but I work in drug alcohol rehab, and have family members that are addicted.
A lot of people I know started because their friends were doing it. Honestly
Most because they have legal problems or have been seperated from their family.
Most of them for at least 20yr or so.

I started out a social user, when I could see that it was starting to tear my life apart I gave up the party life. The most motivating factor was what will my children and grandchildren think of me!

My husband is the alcoholic. Sober 16 years. He drank for 40 years
He started drinking to cope with life and problems, and after we met, realized his higher power (GOD) could help him with life and his problems and God took the craving for alcohol away.
This illness is hereditary, his father and cousins are (were, they are now deceased) alcoholics. His siblings could be, but they saw what it did to him and their father, so they don't touch it
