My Dell Dimension DIM4600 pc often shuts down after a short time of being logged on, usually in the mornings after having not being used over night. When I start up again the message "caution, previous shut down caused by thermal event, press f1 key to continue" appears. This can happen several times a morning until the pc seems to have warmed up. Anybody out there got a solution, please?

I think you should take a look inside and make sure nothing is out of place or broken, maybe there is some issue with the heat sink, however, I don't know of a computer that shuts down because it is too cold, thats a bit strange to me. Usuaully they would shut down if there is an issue with the heat sink not keeping the CPU cool.

Thermal event is cause by over heating. Maybe one of your fans stopped working. There is a fan in the PSU and one in the back for the case, one on your CPU. Sometime graphics cards have fans also. Clean all the dust off of everything. Your fans Check them all to see if there working. All of them should be moving.

Your processor is overheating. It could be due to inadequate case airflow or inadequate processor cooling because of dirty heatsink or malfunctioning fan or ALL of those. Use a temperature monitoring software like Everest or Speedfan to check processor temperature. Consider better coolers from Zalman, Thermaltake, Arctic Cooling, Coolermaster, etc.

Your computer is probably running hot. How long has it been since you blew the dust out of it, especially the heat sink on the CPU?

You might need to have a look at your cooling fans to make sure they're functioning correctly and are seated properly.
