functionalists believe in meritocracy - those who work hardest reap the rewards.

functionalists believe that everybody has an equal chance, that working class and middle class both have an equal chance of succeeding and achievement is only gained by effort alone.
whereas Marxists believe that the middle Class will always achieve more than Working Class has they have the power over the other classes. They pass on their rules and values by Ruling Class Ideology.
Conclusion: Functionalists-people are all equal and achievement =effort.
Marxist= MC (a.k.a Ruling Class) will always have the advantage as they have Cultural Capital (experience museums, art etc) and Elaborated Code (perfect grammer) and will achieve higher than WC.
I hope this helps

A functionalist will see education as an essential element to the functioning and advancement of society.
A Marxist will typically see it as an element to further and benefit Capitalism. Do note that Marxists blame bad weather on Capitalism or anything that goes wrong in society and really are just an anti Capitalist standpoint that links everthing to being to the benefit of Capitalism and Marxists only exist to criticise Capitalism rather than focus on their own shortcomings in their own preferred society.
