Why didn't Dumbledore know about the diadem of Ravenclaw? It was a widely known object and, although one that was considered to be lost for centuries, all he had to do would be to ask the Grey Lady. The book says he probably did and she just wouldn't tell him. But why not? She tells Harry when he explains it's to defeat Voldemort (Dumbledore could have said the same thing) and she knows she told the story once to Tom Riddle. Maybe it's the battle and the realisation of what is REALLY happening in the world and around them, that Hogwarts itself is in danger of destruction, that finally makes her talk about it? What do you think?

Yes, I agree that Dumbledore could not know everything (nor should we expect him too). I've been saying all along that he was only human (gifted, but only human).

dumbledore doesn't know everything...but he has theories...maybe he needed harry to figure it out on his own...and the diadem was lost, the only person who knew (other then tom) was the ravenclaw ghost...and i don't think she would have told dumbledore...she was too ashamed

Dumbledore was a genius and all, but it's possible that he just didn't quite put two and two together at the time. Harry had lots of help along the way in his quest. And was helped in this case because he had actually seen the darned thing with his own eyes once. So Dumbledore may have known exactly what the diadem looked like, but had never actually found it. I doubt Dumbledore would have been looking for a place to hide things during his time at Hogwarts and may never have seen that particular aspect of the room of requirements.

Hm. Another good question. I think it was because Dumbledore didn't know that the diedam was a horcrux. maybe? Because if he did he probably would have told Harry, right? But maybe not...he did keep an awful lot of things secret from Harry as we know.
And maybe Tom and Harry are just more persuasive than Dumbledore. Though I doubt that.

Dumbledore hadn't even figured out that some of the horcruxes were things belonging to the Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin until he was very close to his death(which as we know was all planned out). He already had so much on his plate, he really had put much of his plan at risk. Luckily Harry pays attention to his surroundings.
Thanks for the question!!!

The thing is, Dumbledore didn't tell her that it was used to defeat voldermort because he couldn't risk letting too many people know. Especially a ghost that could babble to other people about this fact. (You do realize throughout the stories how gossipy the ghosts and pictures are among themselves.)
