while your top list car has the most potential if you are indeed a beginner but have some talents the diamond star cars [eclipse,laser,talon] have more performance out of the box
if you have the coins go with the honda if you have to work for everything you get and drive it every day, go for the mitsu. the all wheel drive ones can be awsome.

You pretty much answered your own questions. Honda's are the easiest to tune for beginners. There are so many aftermarket parts for these types of cars. A Civic SIR is a hard car to find these day but they are out there. So good luck and have fun.

Your definition of Tune may be different than other peoples. When I hear tune I'm thinking grab the wideband and laptop and find a big stretch of road or a dyno. If your looking to just mod a car a little then I'd go with the Honda. But if your looking for a car that you can change out the maps and make some pretty big power I'd go with a DSM for the $$$. The 4g63 engine is almost bullet proof but your trannys are gonna fry. Only granny shift always.
