(x - √2) (x + √2) = 0
x = ± √2

x^2 - 2 = 0
x^2 = 2
x = sqrt(2)

x^2 - 2 = 0

Add 2 to both sides

x^2 = 2

Taking square roots on both sides

x = +/- sqrt(2)

+ or - because square of both + root 2 as well as - root 2 will also give you 2.
