I'm applying to colleges soon and I'm just wondering if being Burmese, a country not in China makes me a minority or am I still looked at as "another Asian who I will review harder" for the college admission people? It's a southeast asian country.

So will being a southeastern asian HELP me or HURT me or will it have no affect on my application review?

And also will it HURT me if there is some kind of internal war in Burma right now. (Burma's fight for Democracy which is a hot topic in today's news)

Honestly, it won't make the slightest difference. Not only are you Asian, but the whole minority thing is really over-hyped. Fact is at the top universities there are so many brilliant applicants, race has nothing to do with getting in - you're there because you belong there (or you play football).

However, if you have any ties to the current uprising, it would make for a memorable essay.

Like it or not, being Burmese means that you are Asian. That means that at many schools, you will not be looked at as underrepresented. It may help at a few schools, and hurt at others.
