Galileo Galileo was a Christian, George LeMaitre, the man who proposed the big bang theory was a devote Belgian priest, Professor Hawking keeps referring to God in his book “A brief history of time”. The existence prehaps is not that much dispute but the nature of the different creators is extremely different. For instance in some religions God based humans on his image and this would definitly not be the God that Stephen or many others believe.
When you look at the universe at any scale you see that it follows precise and elegant mathematical laws, it is the origin of these laws that is God rather than the one who created humans.

Buddhists and Hindus are astronomers also.

Many scientists believe in the "watchmaker" God. He starts up the universe with certain initial conditions, then lets it go (free will). The job of the scientist is to discover these initial conditions and their logical consequences. God does not interfere with the operation of the universe; in that sense, he does not "exist" in the universe.
