I really want a laptop but the problem is, I don't know what to look out for.
- I play the Multi Combat games, need a hell lot of memory.
- I do heavy research, so what do I need for that?
- I listen to music and don't like them being slow. So??
- and a webcam installed. and bluetooth.
- and I like the colour white.
Yeah, so mind helping me with the first three options? I'm really considering the HP Pavilion tx1005AU but according to my dad, it's not good (blablabla). What laptop is suitable for a demanding user like me?
PS. Are Macbooks good?

What does heavy research mean? Hmm, means I have to get everything compiled into one document, and I don't know if I'm cursed or something, but everytime I touch a computer while doing my work, an error just happens and I don't want to lose them? Backup. Yeah. Computers have a problem with me.
games I play. Soldier Front.
And yes, I am aware of the educational discount :)

Most laptops can be upgraded to have up to about 4 GiB RAM if you need it now (though it probably isn't wise to go above 3 GiB).
What does heavy research mean? Number crunching or just web browsing?
Pretty much anything recent should be able to play an MP3 in the background without causing you any problems.

About the Mac part
For you purpose, you are better off buying a Macbook Pro [1]. Either way, most laptops can only hold as much as 2 GB of memory. In addition, since you are affiliated with a university, I presumed, don't forget the education discount
- multi-combat: what game? if you are going for a mac, you might want to check whether a mac version is available (although you can install windows via bootcamp, i did that just so that I can play my friend's copy of Oblivion)
- Research... what kind of research? if it involves AutoCAD, again, you'll need Windows
- it's hard to find a laptop these days with bad music playback. iTunes runs extremely well on Macs
- Built-in iSight (webcam) very good quality. All Macbooks have wifi and bluetooth built in as factory standards.
- Macbook Pros don't come in white, but there are cases that you can buy.
Can't really advise you on the other options, except that Dell laptops tend to look pretty ugly imo. HP are ok, but you need to look at the specs carefully before making a decision. Vaio used to be awesome but a recent consumer survey from PC Mag showed that their ratings dropped [3].

Actually, you should listen to what your dad has to say, a laptop is an investment that you will have to live with for the years to come.
Can you be more specific on what games you play?
For instance, if you play something like Battlefield 2, then you definitely don't want the tx1005AU. In this case you will need a laptop that features at least an Nvidia 8400M graphics card.
Also, what type of research do you do, I mean, what computer programs in specific? You need to be aware that a lot of programs are not compatible with Vista just yet, and other bunch is not compatible with Macs.
A lot of music? No problem, just get a machine with 2 Gigs of RAM.
More imporntaly, what's your price range?
See, it's not easy at all, so I don't blame you for not knowing what to get.
I do recommend you visit this site:

It's a forum, just sign up and answer all the questions on the thread I pointed you to. Then post them under a new topic here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16
Doing so will narow down the options, and in the end, they will tell you exactly what system best suits your needs.

Hi for games you dont want a mac book as the restriction on the different EXE file types, i would go with a Sony Vaio they are good for gaming and multimedia most sony vaio computers come with atleast 1GB ram and a dual core processor but the downside is they are rather expensive the cheapest i've found is through laptop.com.au or an Acer Travelmate 5270 they have integrated Webcam bluetooth infrared wireless networking 1 or 2 gb ram and a Intel Centrino - dual core processor at about 2ghz. these are awesome for gaming and come in a few different colours or your last option is to build your own computer with Dell go here and find the best one for you i recommend the XPS- M1730

What the first guy said.
Get an 8600 or better.
Dual core processor.
160GB Hard disk.
The amount of memory in a laptop is not important, because you can upgrade it easily. Don't let that be a deciding factor.
The newest Acers are good, check them out.
Macbooks are not at all good, especially for gaming.
