Sacking her is probably the last thing she needs right now. She needs help so why not reach out and offer it?

Hello xxleesa32,
If I were her boss and she continued to appear in work drunk or smelling of drink, especially when dealing with the public and after warnings about her failings, she would be a thing of the past and simply dismissed.
If I were a customer I would complain to the owner and if nothing was done I would simply not use the store anymore.
There are laws about drink/driving and it is the duty of the police to see they are obeyed. If they have been informed that this woman is driving whilst incapable through drink, they should take action and lay in wait to breathalyse her.
I would tell the police that if they do not do their duty you will raise an official complaint about their lack of action. I bet that will get them moving.
It is so often the case that the police will not get involved until something happens. If this drunk knocked over a child and killed it, its a bit late for the police to step in then.
Drink/driving is one of my pet hates and I feel very strongly about it. Anyone caught doing this should be banned for at least 5 years for a first offence and if they re-offend again, they should be banned for life.

your boss is not doing his job properly. By now she should have had verbal and written warnings and the sack. This woman needs help but she is not going to seek it while your boss feels sorry for her. The police can only do something if they catch her actually driving while over the limit so next time she is in that state phone them and tell them exactly where she is , ask the for the name and number of the person you are reporting it to and tell them they will be held responsible is she crashes/kills someone while drunk. Also tell your bboss that if he does not follow the correct rpocedure you will be forced to leave and sue him for constructive dismissal as you are being forced to take up the slaclk when she arrives drunk. Then catch her when sober (if that is possible) and tell her that she is an alcoholic and what is she going to do about getting help/

if she is driving to work drunk why is she being allowed to go home? the boss is also encouraging her to drink drive!!
I would phone the police the next time she is sent home and tell them someone has just left your shop and drove off while under the influence... they may come out if she is driving.. you could even give an address that you think she will be driving too, this way they might catch her arriving home
but you cant sack someone.. but you should try to get them help

You've expressed your concerns and with very valid reasons too i should say! I really don't know why your boss won't do anything about it because, and should an accident occur ... He would be partly responsible. Finally! Was it my shop ... I wouldn't trust anyone drunk to serve my customers, look after til and shop! Have you considered telling your boss that other workers, including you! Feel very unhappy about this? Might make him think that he could end up up without good workers if he doesn't put his foot down where she is concerned.

Eventually her co workers will be doing her work for her. Alcoholics at work rarely pull their weight. The fact she is endangering the public by driving is something we have seen too often in the news.
Get a letter of to the Police next time and let them know you will advise the local press. That will get them moving.

You need to pressure your boss to sack her.
Apart from the reasons you have mentioned in your question, why should you have to work harder to cover her mistakes when she is drunk?
If she knoks someone down & kills them your boss will surely have to bear part of the responsibility. A person is just as guilty of something if they allowed it to happen by doing nothing as the person that actually did it.

i think next time she does this phone 999 or 911 wherever you are, and report the driver of her car details and all for driving erratically , mounting the kerb, and clipping the back of someones car....yes it might be a lie, but they will have to come out and investigate her, there and then, and when she is shown to be over the limit with her breath test she will be arrested. not only may this frighten her into getting some treatment...it may also save a life. good luck xx

I don't know why any boss would put up with that type of behaviour from an employee but that is his problem.
The fact she is driving under the infulence is everyone's problem.
You have done the right thing - all you can do is to continue to report her and hope she gets caught.

I remember years ago a similar situation and the police didn't do a thing I think what the 4th answerer said is a great idea you then have put it all over on the police, they will then have to do something what a great thought.

Very difficult to sack someone because you think they are drunk. They may smell of alcohol, but if you sack them and get it wrong it could be very costly at a tribunal.
I have no complaints about anything that happens to a drink driver. You can sack them and throw them in prison, but getting your assumption wrong could be bad for your boss.
