It is always best to tune a car up every 10 thousand kilometres. This only needs to involve an oil change, filter change, check the air cleaner and sparks. Some people are more anal about it but really thats all it takes. Make sure that you check fluid levels regularly so as not to get any other surprises.

Your user manual will have the service intervals listed. Tune-up service depends on your mileage and driving conditions. I don't recall right off hand, but I believe coolant is every 30K, transmisison fluid every 50K, spark plugs 50K. There's also fuel filter, and maybe a cabin filter. If you live in a rural area and don't encounter much stop-and-go traffic, you can get away with the regular intervals. Otherwise, most people should look at the "severe" conditions schedule. An honest lube shop will tell you what items need to be done. But before you go, check your service manual. There are some dishonest shops out there that will try to sell you everything under the sun. The following is an esimate of what you should expect to pay:
Spark plugs (platinum), $130 4-cyl, $150 6cyl. Coolant flush $60 for standard coolant (30K mi), $80 for extended life (150K mi). Transmission fluid change, $60. Don't let someone try to sell you a more expensive "flush" for the Camry. There's no such thing on Camrys. Fuel filter change $55. Cabin filter (if there is one) $40. Fuel injector / intake service $60 (this is optional, but recommended). In rare instance, you may need the power steering fluid changed. If you do, $60. Again, not all of these may be necessary. They should be checked before a determinatin is bade as to whether or not they're needed. If you live near Riverside or Moreno Valley, CA, stop by one of our Texaco Xpress Lube shops.

I have a 1986 Camry and do a tune up religiously every 40K miles. I change the fluids, spark plugs and wires, air filter, fuel injectors, and serpentine belt and timing belt; and change if needed (these checks are in addition to scheduled maintenance checks). Over 250K miles and still going strong.

I've always done my own car work so I'm not sure how much a shop might charge you, but I imagine they'll have a list of stuff they do for their tune up and then if anything else is wrong they'll call you to approve an estimate for the work.

*cheers*

if you wanna make sure everything is tip top, get the
transmission fluid changed, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, coolant changed, oil change, and fluids all checked. do this every 50 000 k or so, the plugs and plug wires could last 100 k. transmission fluid is most important, lots of people are dumb and dont change it. other than that just get the oil done every 5 k and check for any leaks now and then.
