You did the first thing correct..don't bid early and push up the price.
Second, open 2 windows. One you use to refresh, the other you have placed your bid, gone onto the second screen ready to confirm.
Refresh using the refresh button that appears in the eBay screen during the last 15 minutes of the auction (that way you don't re-paint the whole screen)
When the time gets down to about 10 to 5 seconds, click confirm on other window, this does not give the other person time to enter another bid. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to move the pointer over & click confirm...and have it go through before the end of auction time. Don't cut it TOO close.
btw - this is called sniping.

The best method to win an auction is to BID on it. You may get lucky sniping but in the long run you are scaring off sellers that have an honest lower starting bid. Just how much money do you want to save this time? How about in the future? Snipers have forced me to start at my asking price and if I don't sell it, well to put it mildly, I don't care. The item can sit in the warehouse listed on my own website. Sooner or later I sell everything at a fair market value. Sniping is not giving the seller a fair price for a good item.

Go ahead, place a bid. You may have to keep bidding until your bid is more than the other person's max bid.
Then sit and wait til it's down to the last 5 minutes or so, then raise your max bid by $1.01
Unless it's something special, a one of a kind item, or a hand made item, don't go crazy on your bidding. You have to decide what it's worth and what you are willing to pay.

It's best to bid on the item during the last five minutes of the auction so that you don't raise the value of the item
Tip: enter the highest amount you would pay but remember only during the last 5 minutes

Well, I hope you won it. Usually, it is best to bid within the last 20 seconds. By the way, if you want to know a way to get money back every time you buy something from Ebay and other popular stores, then send me an email.

You have to sit there and refresh your view. (Green circular arrows up top to the right of your URL address bar in IE.)
Be ready for all the last second action.
Know what you are willing to pay and don't get sucked into a last minute frenzy.
